Kimihiro Watanuki was orphaned as a young kid when his parents died in a car crash. Ever since, he has been living by himself and has more or less become a very self-sufficent person, learning to cook and clean. Watanuki also has a "sixth sense", because he has the ability to see spirits. Also, he is plagued by yokai, or spirits that are drawn to him for whatever reason. Later on in the series we see why spirits are drawn to Watanuki when Yuko tells him that spirits are attracted to unfortune, something that has been a reoccuring happening in Kimihiro's life.

Wata-chan (as I affectionately call him) is the main protagonist in the series. xxxHolic starts out with Wata-puu running away from his annoying and stalker-ish yokai, who seem to enjoy following poor Wata-pii everywhere he goes. Wata-tan comes across a "Wish Shop". He feels a pull and is somehow drawn into the shop by an invisible force. When inside, he meets Yuko, the owner of the shop and, apparantly, a woman with the power to grant virtually any wish imaginable... if you're willing to pay a price. Yuko, upon seeing Watanuki, explains what the shop is, what she does, and asks what his wish is. Watanuki's wish is to be free of his yokai. The price he must pay for this is to work part-time as Yuko's housekeeper/slave. This obviously turns Wata-tan's life upside-down and spins it out of any normal parts of his life (though there aren't many, seeing as Wata-puu can already see and sense spirits). Unfortunately for Wata-chii, Yuko's solution for his yokai is for him to be around Shizuka Domeki, his one-sided rival, though in truth this probably really isn't even a solution, just another way for Yuko to get underneath Wata-pii's skin. The series is basically a chronology of events involving the spirit world, trips to the drug store for hangover pills, and endless crossovers with the ever dramatic Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRONiCLE. RELATIONSHIPS Himawari Himawari is Watanuki's object of affection and love interest throughout the series. Whenever he's around her, he get's all happy and cheerful, and he might as well be running through a field of daisies singing Chisina Nori whenever he sees Himawari. Through Wata-chan's eyes, Himawari is the cutest, sweetest, most considerate, most adorable, most polite, all out most amazing girl you will ever meet. He's completely infatuated. Right as soon as she hears about Himawari, Yuko warns Wata-tan against Himawari saying that it's not a good idea to spend so much time around her. Others connected with the spirit realm also say this about Himawari to Watanuki. Later on in the series we find out that Himawari has some sort of curse that makes others around her find harm. This is the reason that Watanuki's pinky finger pretty much died when he touched it to Himawari's, why spirits almost ate Watanuki when he was with Himawari, why Watanuki fell several stories and almost died when he was with Himawari... Himawari is the one to tell Watanuki about this misfortune that she holds, and then walks away stating that she understands if he doesn't want to be around her anymore. Watanuki then stops her telling her that he couldn't care less if she's cursed or not, and that he wants to be around her anyway because he's in love with her and he could never make her cry. Himawari sees this gesture as a sign that Watanuki is really a true friend. At the end of the chapter it shows Himawari walking down the street, crying but smiling, and saying, "Watanuki, you liar, you said that you would never make me cry, but what you sid was so kind I can't NOT cry about it." It's unclear about whether or not Himawari is attracted to Watanuki romantically, even after he tells her that he loves her. It is however obvious that she sees him as a true friend. Domeki I can come up with endless counterparts to this comedic pair. Sohma Yuki and Nao from Fruits Basket, Yuri and Chihiro from Hoshi Wa Utau, Sohma Kyo and Sohma Yuki from Fruits Basket, Uzumaki Naruto and Uchiha Sasuke from Naruto, Rachel's dad and Jimmy from Detective Conan, Soshi and Dark from DNAngel... basically, the main idea is unrequieted rivalry. Total one-sided competition for... for what, Himawari? It started out at first like that, when Watanuki got the impression that Himawari was attracted to Domeki, but later I think it developed into more of a you're-so-much-cooler-it's-not-fair-im-superior-let-me-prove-it kind of rivalry for Watanuki.

Plot

The series surrounds Kimihiro Watanuki, a high school student who is more or less a "spirit magnet", spirits being strangely attracted to him. The spirits, called "yokai", are invisible to everyone but Watanuki and are a constant annoyance to him.

Watanuki finds a "Wish Shop" owned by Ichihara Yuko, who apparantly is a witch with the power to grant wishes, pretty much any wish. If he is willing to pay, she says she will grant Watanuki's wish; to be free of the yokai.

This part of the series might remind Fullmetal Alchemist fans of the process of "equivalent exchange", which states that in order to gain something, something of equal value must be given up. In order for Yuko to grant a wish, the one wishing must pay a price that is of equal value of the wish. In Watanuki's case, the price turns out to be.... well, being Yuko's part-time "employee", or slave. Whichever you want to call it.

Being Yuko's slave means that Watanuki basically has to take care of her chorse, whether that be trips to the supernatural realm or to the drug store for some hangover pills. His life turns upside-down from that point on.

In the series Watanuki is frequently running Yuko's "errands" in the supernatural world with his so-called "rival", Shizuka Domeki. Later on in the series, Watanuki's crush, Himawari, starts to appear more and has more to do with the supernatural.
